HOW TO CREATE A CAPSULE WARDROBE

A ‘capsule wardrobe’ is a phrase meaning a collection of essential garments, these tend to be clothes that won’t go out of style at the end of a season. These pieces are staples and things you would spend a bit more on so that you can keep them for years and get good use out of them. Once you create your capsule wardrobe you can occasionally add trend pieces in so that you have a diverse range and can mix up your style from season to season. Now how do I create a capsule wardrobe you may ask? Well, I’ve made a small list of steps that I hope will be easy to follow and useful to your endeavour.

My first step is to organise your clothes into categories. This will be ‘love cannot possibly part with’, ‘maybe.. I’m not sure’ and ‘definitely can go’. For the clothes that you’re going to keep, hold on and I’ll talk about them later. For the ‘definitely can go’ pile keep reading and refer to the next step.

Next up you need a clear out! If the rail in your wardrobe is bending and overcrowded you need to sort that out asap! All the clothes that you bought on a whim that you’ve worn once and haven’t seen the light of day since need to go. You have a few options at this point, if you feel like you can’t throw it out because of the price tag/brand then you can sell it online to get some of your investment back (maybe even spend this money on a new staple piece). However if you don’t want the hassle and you’re feeling generous you can give your old clothes to charity and help someone else out. After the clear out you should be left with the clothes that you really love and wear all the time.

Establish your staples and invest. At this point your wardrobe should be looking better after the cull, you’ve got your favourite pieces and the ones you wear to death. Now you need to think about upgrading your basics for ones that are similar yet made to a higher standard and quality. Don’t get me wrong this won’t be a one day step, you’ll be investing piece at a time till you have them all. Also during this step you can reevaluate your personal style and question whether there are other staples you want to include that you don’t yet have.

Display your new capsule collection. Now that you have all that extra space you can start finding a way to display them, whether you colour code your wardrobe or go by type of garment (maybe it’s just my OCD but I love reorganising my wardrobe..). Be proud to show off your capsule wardrobe. A trick I’ve learnt to keep from going in circles is using clothes rails as you can actually see what you have and not start hoarding again. Finding a tidy way to store your clothes and accessories is not only visually pleasing but helpful when choosing outfits, for example I have a hat wall to neatly store them (plus it’s extremely instagrammable!)
