“Black is modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy – but mysterious. But above all black says this: ‘I
don’t bother you – don’t bother me.” – Yohji Yamamoto
To me, an all black ensemble is a simple yet powerful statement. It is what gives me the most confidence and allows me to feel like myself. After years of people telling me to try wearing colour or that I looked as though I was going to a funeral, I have learnt that as long as I feel comfortable I don’t need to concern myself with their opinions.
Novem & Knight, a company created by my favourite Youtubers Sammi and Jason, a while back released the Indie shirt dress. Needless to say I fell in love with it immediately! At the time I didn’t have the money and it quickly went out of stock (I’m sure you’re all familiar with that shopping experience). So I took to searching for a similar one online but nothing came close to the style and cut. Luckily for me it came back in stock a couple of weeks ago, so I snatched it up within the first few minutes.
Naturally my first port of call was to style this as an all black outfit. I chose my all time favourite leather jacket from All Saints, which is perhaps the most worn out of anything in my wardrobe, and it became a match made in heaven. The two pieces compliment each other so well, the soft yet structured shirt dress against the raw and casual leather jacket. I will wear my leather jacket with just about anything, but another beautiful accompaniment could be a long trench coat or even a white structured coat to smarten up the look.
This shirt dress is such a versatile piece as I could tuck it into jeans or wear it alone – for this particular day however it was rather cold so I chose tights. The cut means that it’s slightly longer at the back with a curved hem, which for me is important as I wouldn’t want it to be too short. Not to mention how soft the fabric is, another lovely detail which makes it a new staple in my wardrobe. I couldn’t praise this enough and highly recommend the Indie to everyone as it’ll become a favourite in your wardrobe too. To finish off the look I grabbed my large tote and wore some black chelsea boots. These ones have a mix of faux suede and croc texture, with of course (I’m obsessed) a pointed toe.
